Innovative, premium television on a global scale
Founded in 2008 by Jane Root, former President of Discovery Networks US, Controller of BBC2 and co-founder of Wall to Wall, Nutopia is known for creating ground-breaking factual shows on a global scale.
From the company’s inception Nutopia was at the forefront of the industry, creating a new genre of television – the ‘megadoc’ – which combines epic cinematography and action-driven drama with high-end documentary and A list talent. The first of these was the Emmy Award-winning America: Story of US, which gained critical plaudits and record-breaking ratings success. The Story of Us format has sold globally in many international markets.
Nutopia has a proven track record of critical achievement including the extraordinary 12-part series Mankind The Story of All of Us for History Channel; landmark Emmy Award-winning series How We Got to Now; and two series of the ratings smash Finding Jesus. Fact. Faith. Forgery for CNN.
Recent broadcast successes include the epic One Strange Rock for National Geographic, natural history/science collaboration with director Darren Aronofsky, hosted by Hollywood A-lister Will Smith; Civilisations, the spectacular history of global art and civilisation for the BBC and PBS, featuring presenters Simon Schama, Mary Beard and David Olusoga; and The Great American Read, documentary series and public service campaign for PBS, exploring and celebrating the power of reading.
Currently in production is season 2 of One Strange Rock for National Geographic; The World According to Jeff Goldblum, for the launch of the new Disney+ video on demand service; and The Hunt for Jihadi John, a feature doc for HBO and Channel 4. Also in production, but currently unnamed, are two premium series for Netflix and a multi-part project for Amazon.
Other credits include Jesus: His Life (History), America: Promised Land (History US), Beyond Reasonable Doubt (CNN), and Africa’s Great Civilisations (PBS).
